Swiss Officials: Big Cloud Platforms Pose Threat to National Privacy

The Swiss government is warning public offices to stop using cloud services like Microsoft 365, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services for any kind of sensitive or confidential work. Officials say these platforms do not offer full end-to-end encryption, which means the companies running these services can still access the data in an unencrypted form. This is considered a major security risk, especially because many of these tech companies are based in the United States. Under U.S. laws, American authorities can force these companies to hand over user data, even if the information is stored on servers in another country. Switzerland believes this could endanger government privacy, national security, and the control the country has over its own data. As a result, the government is advising agencies to move to systems where Switzerland fully controls the encryption keys, or to work with cloud providers that guarantee complete data sovereignty. This move suggests that Switzerland may reduce its reliance on big American cloud services in the future and instead look for more secure, locally controlled options
